The Honored Housekeeper
As she safely unhooked the clasp and tenderly laid down the new pendant, Claire could not help but feel the teardrop running down her cheek. Only hours before, her whole family had been honored to join the Stewart family in the drawing room for tea and cakes prepared in her honor. It was a party to celebrate her 25 years of service as the housekeeper for the Stewart family. The pendant had been a gift from the Stewarts and bore the initial of her whole family in the monogram. Her master, the current Earl, was a credit to the estate and would do his father proud. He had only assumed the title of Earl two years ago after the passing of his father, but he had already proven himself to be fair and even-tempered in dealing with the tenants and the affairs of the estate. He was but two years of age when Claire had joined the estate as a maid to his mother. Quickly she proved herself to be trustworthy and skilled. Shortly after her mistress died in childbirth to the young Miss Stewart, Claire was promoted to housekeeper. Old Earl Stewart found her invaluable with keeping the estate in running order. The new Earl looked to her much the same, not only in the estate but in helping with his charge of readying the young Miss Stewart.
