A Master's Companion
Coming in from a walk outside, I shake off and go to my special spot by the fire. Today was colder than the last. The squirrels were running around in the front yard frantically looking for acorns. I barked at them to tell them to leave my yard alone. They, of course, chattered at me and ran away. Finally feeling warm, I shake my head to straighten out my fur. The pendant on my collar shakes as well. It is my special pendant my master made for me. She spent many hours in her special room while I sat by the fire watching. My master draws on paper, erases and redraws perfecting her design. Sometimes papers get crumpled and thrown on the floor just for me to play ball. There are good days for Master like when she gets excited, claps her hands and rubs my belly saying, “Duchess, it is going to be so beautiful!” Then there are the bad days when she puts her head on her table and wraps her arms around herself. Those are the days I know she needs me most. I gently nudge her leg, and she lifts me up to bury her head in my shoulder. She pets me, and I give her gentle kisses. Then master smiles and says, “Yes, you’re right, Duchess. I’ll get it right next time.”
