Sitting under the sparse shade of a mesquite tree, Mabelle hummed a tune, trying to drown out the sounds of her husband cursing the busted wagon wheel. It was increasingly more difficult each day to remember she had agreed to leave their comfortable townhome in Boston to search for spiraling fields of wheat and cattle-grazing pastures filled with wild flowers. After all these weeks of living in a wagon and facing every kind of hardship one could expect on the trail, Mabelle was almost ready to call it quits. When she got to these moments, she thought of the house she and her beloved would build together and the family that would soon follow. She thought of her pendant bearing her initials that her husband had given her on their first anniversary. It was currently hidden in a false bottom of the bean barrel with all their other priceless possessions. One day she hoped to pass the pendant on to her daughter or daughter-in-law. Sighing, she got up, dusted off, and went to help her beloved so that they could together reach the place of their dreams.
