The Doberman, which ranks in the top 20 breeds and 5th smartest dogs, are loyal, playful and loving canines.  Doberman were first bred in the 1880's by Karl Friedrich Louis Doberman in Apolda, Thuringia, Germany.  He was a tax collector who ran the Apolda dog pound.  This gave him access to many breeds, which is how he got the idea to create a breed that would be ideal for a combination of Rottweilers, German Pinschers, both black and tan Terriers, Weimaraner and the short hair Shepherds.
