Over 488 years ago Jacques Cartier discovered the Gulf of St. Lawrence. He named it in honor of Lawrence of Rome, a martyred saint whose feast day is August 10. The Gulfs name inspired the naming of the river, county and St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. It's said that no fear could be induced to betray the saint's trust, and he devoted his life to service and never faltered in the performance of his duty. Fides et Veritas (Faith and Truth) was chosen to reflect what he stood for. It's a great day to be a saint!
