An Intrepid Journey

Still in mourning black and wearing the monogrammed pendant her beloved, recently-departed husband gave her, Adelicia and her cousin, Sarah, set out from the relative safety of Nashville, Tennessee, on a mission of vital importance.  The Confederate General Polk had seized their warehouse of cotton in Louisiana after the death of Adelicia’s husband, Joseph. Now the ladies were risking their lives to ride across battlefields and enemy lines to plead for the cotton to be spared.  The General had plans to light it afire so that it didn’t fall into Union hands. The ladies know that a fair price could be gotten from England, and with the Confederate states in desperate need of financial stability, selling the cotton was the only path that made sense.  Finally, in Louisiana, Adelicia fell sick and the responsibility fell solely to her cousin, Sarah. Every bit as formidable a lady, Sarah negotiated with the General and was able to save the crop and get it to port.
